Small Volume Blood (SVB)

What is Small Volume Blood Sample Collection?

Small Volume Blood (SVB) for our testing platform is defined as any collection that is 0.5 mL or less of whole blood. By utilizing the latest in tandem mass spectrometry and robotic sample preparation; the total volume needed to generate accurate and reproducible results has been significantly reduced compared to traditional blood testing methodology. With our current technology, the hormone panel only requires 0.15 ml of serum to achieve precise and accurate clinical results. Despite using less sample volume, our method has shown to correlate very well against traditional methods.

Advantages of SVB collection & testing

The power of being able to use smaller volumes of blood is demonstrated by the ability to utilize different forms of collection. Traditional chemistry requires a venous puncture by a medical professional in order to satisfy the volumes needed. Clinicore has been able to drive the required volumes down significantly. This eliminates the need for a phlebotomist, or a medical professional to make the collection. The sample can be collected by either a medical assistant, or by a properly trained patient. The SVB difference could allow a patient to collect the sample at specific time of day or from home if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the tests accurate?

Clinicore lab developed tests undergo extensive validation, establishment testing, as well as rigorous peer review. Results are compared to traditional clinical chemistry results, as well as external controls to ensure results are accurate and reproducible every time. Patient samples are tested in a highly complex clinical laboratory.

Correlation studies were performed on venous to capillary collection. 35 patients male and female from a variety of ages were part of our clinical validation. R2 values of 0.97 for better were found in all analytes. Clinicore also participates in CAP PT for accuracy and an external check.

Will the technology work like a traditional blood draw?

The technology requires only a small volume, so the test gives equivalent results from both venous and capillary draws. A vein to capillary study performed by Clinicore demonstrated the linear correlation and R2 value of 0.987 this means there is a 98.7% agreement between the vein and capillary draw. This demonstrates a very strong correlation between the different types of blood draw.

Are the tests accepted by insurance and Medicare?

All of the tests currently offered by Clinicore are reimbursable test with CPT codes. These tests are reimbursed by Medicare, and all private payers. Many of the tests offered by Clinicore have been a part of clinical chemistry for years. The scientific advancement only reduces sample volume requirements and allows for easy collection of sample. That means no need for a phlebotomist or tying up staff collecting a sample. Furthermore, the patient sample can be collected without sending the patient to a draw station. Clinicore is an in-network lab service provider for many of the private payer plans on the market. This means the patient does not receive an outrageous out of network bill.

How long does it take to receive my results?

Results are available electronically or by fax within 24-48 hours of the sample arriving in the lab. Sample collection kits and shipping materials are provided to the office and samples are shipped via FedEx overnight and in some cases can be picked up by a courier. This means actionable results faster, so that the best care is provided to the patient. A web based requisition and reporting function allows doctors and providers to receive reports from a secure web portal right in their office or any mobile platform with internet capabilities. At Clinicore we believe superior science provides quality results and improves patient care.
